Elizabeth Cullen Young was born in Milngavie in 1907, her father John was a grocer. She entered Glasgow University in 1924 and was living in Greenock by that that time. In her first year of study she took Latin and French, and in her second she took English, Botany and Moral Philosophy, for which she gained a certificate of merit.
